July Update:
Well, we have not seen any oil at all down this way and all seems normal. Fishing has been great on the reef for snapper and grouper, some mahi mahi offshore and in the backcountry we are seeing plenty of juvenile tarpon which are a blast on light tackle. Still have some prime fishing dates available this fall starting in late September.
|
May Update,
Sorry for the delay in fishing report update. The reason for the delay I am pleased to tell you is mainly TARPON! The fish did not show up till a little late due to the cold winter I suspect but they are here now in the biggest numbers I have seen maybe ever!
If you have never caught a tarpon, now is the time to get down here.
I have some morning and evening tides available and the action is incredible, weather you want to try them on fly or watch them eat your foot long live mullet in the bridge channels, its as good as it gets. Attached is a picture I took with a clients I-phone last week. Other species we have been catching are permit, bonefish, shark and jacks. Between now and the end of June is prime time, send me an email if you want to know availability please. I hope to take you fishing soon. |

Other news I would like to report a 2nd place Award from IGFA for captain with the most records for 2009! This award was given to my at the Annual World Record Achievement awards ceremony this past weekend! I got first last year. My clients and I set 27 world records last year! The 2nd annual Marathon Sharkathon went well also with a second place finish for my team! We won a trophy and some cash for this really fun tournament where we targeted Bull, Blacktip and Lemon Sharks! Go team! |

The
Holiday Season is here and so are the
winter time species that migrate here
when northern cool waters. We have been
having some great catches of Cobia,
sailfish, snapper, grouper and kingfish,
just to name a few. If you can get away
this winter come check out the constant
fishing action that is going on here in
the Florida Keys!
On another note, my center console boat
is up and running after a drastic
remodeling and new Suzuki 4 Power
Stroke. She has a jack plate and is
performing even better than before. This
boat is totally customized for Keys
light tackle fishing so no fishing is
off limits! The best Christmas presents
are lurking just below the emerald green
waters of Marathon Key.
If you have the opportunity to
visit the Keys this winter I hope to
hear from you soon.

Been tarpon fly fishing every day in
May, had good success for the most
part with several anglers getting
their first big tarpon on fly.
Congratulations to Andrew and
Richard of the Pangea crew for the
monster tarpon they took on fly in
their first day ever in pursuit of
the silver king! What a great
afternoon of fishing. Here is a
picture of Andrew's monster fish.
Also Al and Smittys Tarpon Bonanza
tournament concluded yesterday and
my anglers Slater and Brandon from
Atlanta came in fourth. We fished in
stormy, windy conditions but the
boys managed in 2 days to catch 2
large tarpon, 2 bonefish, a permit
and a fat snook. Good going.
Palolo worm hatch was a huge success
with 5 days of consecutive worm
hatchings. The best evening we
hooked 7 large tarpon in just 2.5
hours, releasing 3 of them at
boatside.
June, I look foreword to catching
some more tarpon, chasing some slams
and pursuing world records on light
tackle with some great clients. I do
still have a couple of days open so
it you want to know what's biting,
let me know asap.
Thank You,
Capt. Chris Morrison

Last week I had the opportunity to
work with TV show host Henry
Waszczuk and do 2 TV shows on
fishing. His show "Fishing the
Flats" is on several networks and
airs 14 times per week in North
America including Canada.
The first show will premiere on the SunSports Network the first week of June
and in Canada the first week of
July.
Click here for more details on
this episode.
The second show will premiere
on the SunSports Network in Florida the last
week of June.

Wind (26kts) was a major factor as
we set out on Friday and decided to
bait fish for tarpon. We fished in
Henrys boat a 22ft Shearwater with
Mercury 300 Verado, cool boat!
Things went well as we landed 2 big
tarpon one on some banks in Florida
Bay and the other near a bridge. The
2nd fish was 6.5ft long and around
150#. Should be a great show.
Saturday Henry and I fished the
first annual Marathon Sharkathon,
shark fishing all release tournament
based out of the 7 Mile Marina here
in Marathon. Wind was even worse
gusting to 28kts! We came in 2nd
Place and were a 2 man team against
all 3 and 4 man teams so we were
very happy with the results. Landed
12 scoring sharks (over 5ft) the
largest being a 350# bull shark.
Most were blacktips which fight
really hard and do jump some too.
Many times we had 2 on at once, it
was a blast, we broke a rod, and our
arms were sore from all the battles!
Check out Henrys web site to see
when the show "Fishing The Flats"
will air (JUNE).
Thanks. Come see me for some
great fishing.

We
did have a late season 2 day cold
front that kind of blew but ended
quickly. Tarpon are here and biting
good and we have had some
unbelievable permit days out there.
My man Matt got an awesome 73#
blacktip on 12# tippet fly during
the cold front that is a pending
IGFA world record and one that could
prove hard to beat. Was a very nice
catch on a 10wt stick.
So now we are looking at tarpon
season in full swing for the next 2
months, I have some days open the
first week of June and the last part
of June. But can get you out live
baiting for tarpon in the evenings
on mine or another boat in the mean
time so call now if you have not
booked your tarpon charter.

Spring is here, that means tarpon,
permit and bonefish. I am fishing
every day, the weather is great.
Have a couple of days open this
month, call now if you may be
interested.
As promised, here is a picture that
my friend Ron took while I was
feeding a hammerhead off the side of
my boat a few weeks ago. That is a
10# king mackerel I am feeding him.
It was a great rush to have that guy
taking bait repeatedly out of my
hand.

Spring
is getting off to a great start. Fishing
in the Backcountry usually gets good
about this time of year and its red hot
this week. Permit have invaded the flats
and the big tarpon are showing up in
early season spots as well. If you want
to see the real deal on the Florida Keys
Flats you should get on your way down
here as soon as possible!
Thank you for reading.

Hi all, the
weather has broken and the fish are
biting, that cold front last week was
tuff so thank God that's over. Looks
like spring around here now, the Tarpon
are actually starting to roll in the
channels and there are some bones and
permit around.
I am fishing every day right now so I
will just talk about the last 2 days.
Mostly we have fished the reef and
wrecks and one day out on the bay side
of the islands out about 15 miles. The
day in the bay we found a few cobia and
some kingfish along with jacks, snapper,
Spanish Mackerel and 6 large Goliath
Grouper which were a blast. The largest
of those that we caught was around 80#
but one we estimated at 250 tried to eat
a 20# kingfish that Al was fighting, he
came right next to the boat after it
then changed his mind and went back
down. That Grouper was a good 5ft long.
Next day on the reef and wrecks with the
same anglers we had some action with
some amberjacks and a large barracuda.
Then 5 mutton snapper also caught
kingfish on buck tail jigs all day long.
A couple of vermillion snapper too.

The
cool thing was the hammerhead shark over
10ft that came up behind the boat
looking for munchies. He was just
checking us out at first when I released
that he must smell the live bait in my
live well. SO> I had a kingfish laying
on the deck, I held it in the water over
the side of the boat and he went NUTS he
came up about 5 times and ate half of it
in one bite right out of my hand (I had
it by the tail). Next I fed him the
other half and lifted him by the hammer
for a second before he got away.
Did not even try to hook him. What was
wild was that he came back and ate a
second kingfish right out of my hand. My
clients took some pictures which I hope
to get hold of and will post if I do. Oh
yeah, another great catch that day was
lady anger Sue who was jigging for the
next kingfish and hooked a 20# class
blackfin TUNA which gave a really good
fight on the spinning rod she was using.
We all thought it was a king at first
that just would not come up. Oh well
what a nice surprise to see that tasty
guy come up.
All for now, don't forget to email me
with any questions you may have about
availability or what's biting. I still
have some fishing days left open this
spring..
I hope to hear from you,
Captain Chris

Winter time and light tackle fishing
action is very hot right now, with
large kingfish on the reef and out
in the gulf. We are catching many
fish over 30# and loving it. Goliath
grouper, mangrove snapper and Gag
grouper bite is very consistent
also. Cobia have been good between
fronts and slower on days when the
water has been cooled off by the
passing fronts.
In the deep reefs and wrecks we have
been targeting black grouper and
mutton snapper. Most of the snapper
are over 10# and some of the grouper
are over 30#. Black grouper are
probably the hardest fighting fish
in the sea. On sport fishing tackle
catching one over 20# is quite an
accomplishment.
For lighter fishing with kids
I have been going in the bayside for
Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel and
Pompano which are constant action
and a lot of fun. Half day charters
are prefect for when you are taking
kids out.
If you want to try your hand at any
or all of these species I still have
available dates in Feb, march and
early April so call or email as soon
as you can to book.
Thank You,
Captain Chris Morrison
